If you're coming to Jamaica you have to visit Kingston. It's the capital, it's vibrating with music, art, food, and all kinds of cultural expression. If you're coming to Kingston you have to visit Life Yard. This co-operative of young rasta men has its base in a community nicknamed South Side and here the men run an organic farm, a vegetarian kitchen, community projects aimed primarily at neighbourhood children, and conduct tours of their streets. The big draw is the mural project done by Paint Jamaica which draws on the talents of local as well as international artists. The location is an oasis, the men are articulate and passionate, and the art is soul stirring.

Jamaican food is generally described as flavourful. This is due to the emphasis we place on spices and the very tasty seasonings that we use: thyme, ginger, nutmeg, garlic, onion, scotch bonnet pepper, allspice, coriander, and the list goes on. On the Jamaica Cultural Enterprises food tour we have curated locations and experiences designed to showcase the best of Jamaican food. The portions are generous, the food delicious, the experience unforgettable.

They may not know the story of the Mansion (built in 1881 by Jamaica's first black millionaire) but they've certainly heard of the ice cream (deemed the 4th best place in the world to have ice cream by National Geographic). On our tours we usually time it so that we get there before the crowds as this is a spot that is beloved by Kingstonians and the lines for the ice cream can get pretty long. In addition to the mansion (historic) and the ice cream (delicious) on the grounds there are a number of restaurants and shops that are worth visiting. Feeling for some coffee? There's the Devon House Cafe. In the mood for a pizza? There's La Pizzeria. Just want to have a patty? There's the Devon House Bakery. All these locations are set on beautiful grounds on which it is not unusual in the summer to see children racing and playing football.
Book a tour with us that stops at Devon House. There is sure to be something there that pleases you. To find out more email info@jaculture.com or call 1 876 540 8570 (whatsapp). Check out our city tour packages here. The Bob Marley Museum is undoubtedly one of Jamaica's top attractions. For many Marley fans, it can be the reason they visit. With the high energy guides, the wealth of information provided, and the feeling of being on hallowed ground, the Museum never fails to satisfy. We highly recommend a visit to Kingston for this reason.
Let us help you get there. Our city tours do pick ups from Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay and if you're staying further afield we can advise you on how best to get to Kingston and take you around safely while you're here. Like Bob Marley sang, "Smile, you're in Jamaica." It's a hot summer and rainfall is very welcome in our city where temperatures have gotten to be as high as 36 C. This is also the first summer that Jamaica Cultural Enterprises have been able to run our Rum Tasting tour and guests are loving it. The name is inaccurate as we not only drink rum. We also sample favourite Jamaican made wines, stouts, rum creams, and beers. The best part (at least for us guides who can't actually drink while on tour) are the stories that come with the drinks. Which drink do you think has the nickname Rude to Your Parents? Which drink has been banned in stores in the UK because it claims to deliver sexual prowess? In drinking you get to enter into a whole other aspect of Jamaican culture which is about fun and enjoyment, but is also about spiritual practice and history.
So come join us on our Rum Tasting tour. Feel free to ask questions and drop us a line at info@jaculture.com. One love. |
