The community of Rae Town in Kingston will on Saturday, January 25 be the location for a Kingston Creative community tour. Rae Town located in downtown Kingston is a vibrant neighbourhood famous for music events and its fishing village. It also has significant remnants of 19th century buildings scattered throughout which tell an interesting story of post slavery Jamaica. With the efforts of Kingston Creative, it will now have additional mural art. Two tours on January 25 will take individuals through the community explaining its history and showcasing modern life; the first tour will be at 11 am and the second at 2 pm.

These tours are the initial steps to a more sustained community tourism product. In the future there will be a regular walking tour that can be booked on demand. Jamaica Cultural Enterprises is looking forward to taking visitors to Rae Town in the future and enhancing our current offering of Kingston tours.

Remembering the outstanding week of "Jamaica Women in Theatre Festival"

The Jamaican theatre scene has come a long way since its start in the 17th century in Spanish Town. Today, original Jamaican productions are infused with our cultural expressions and social realities, articulated by our writers, and brought to life by a team of artists.  The most commercially successful genre in Jamaican theatre is comedy, however, a new era has seen the emergence of several performance companies and independent performers pioneering new theatre styles and producing quality works through a wide range of genres.

A highlight in March 2018 was the 2nd staging of the “Jamaica Women in Theatre Festival” organized by writer, director and actress Dahlia Harris. The festival ran from March 19 to March 25, showcasing works from talented Jamaican women writers, directors, and actors.

The festival showcased a diverse array of short plays, play extracts, play readings and video installations, but a common theme running throughout was identity and culture. Among the works mounted was an extract from Centerstage’s comedic drama “Right Girl, Wrong Address“, which highlighted actresses Sakina Deer and Sharee Elise.

Yay, I am starting this blog again!

Bloggers will know that keeping up the pace with regular entries is often a challenge (so please be gentle) but I've recommitted to providing the Jamaica Cultural Tours clients with up to date information on the major events happening in Jamaica, especially Kingston. And there is a great deal to see, do and explore.

National Gallery of Jamaica's Upcoming Biennial

The first post is announcing the upcoming exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ), one of our favourite places to visit (such a cool space, folks, truly). NGJ doubles as a gallery and museum and so it's a good place to get a perspective on Jamaica through the lens of art. It is therefore recommended even if you're not an avid art fan but are simply interested in culture and history. One of the ways of course, to hear, view and participate in new discourse on Jamaican culture and history is through visiting the exhibitions. On Feb 26 there will be the official opening of a brand new exhibition at the National Gallery, the Jamaica Biennial 2017.

There will be three locations at which the art will be showcased: the National Gallery, Devon House, and National Gallery West in Montego Bay. Artists will be Jamaican, of Jamaican heritage or from the Caribbean, and the kind of art will vary and includes painting, sculpture and new media, among others.

Of course all the artists are talented but I do have favourites. I am especially looking forward to seeing new work by Jasmine Thomas-Girvan whose work is amazing, approaching a kind of detailed preciousness you would think would be irritating but is not. It is also a great exhibition to discover new artists and new perspectives.

If you won't be in Jamaica on Feb 26, not to worry: the exhibition will remain up until May 28, 2017. This gives you plenty of time to visit. And of course, Jamaica Cultural Tours, being fans of all things artistic, should be the ones to take you there. Feel free to drop me a line at khutchinson@jaculture.com and I will arrange your art tour and visit to the National Gallery.

I look forward to the new exhibition and to meeting you in Kingston!
